# Settings

> Every adjustable option, where it is stored, and who it affects.

Three kinds of setting, three places they live.

Open Settings from the gear in the menu bar (Edit › Preferences, ⌘K / Ctrl+K). The window has a rail of sections; every change applies at once — there is no Save button outside Keyboard Shortcuts.

| Preferences | General, Canvas, On Air, Output | This browser (localStorage) | Every editor window in this browser. Export / Import moves them between machines. |
| Show settings | Show (and its Format) | On the page | Every editor, /view and the HTTP API. Undoable in the editor, saved with the page. |
| Machine settings | System | On the server (data/machine.json) | Every browser using this server. An environment variable that is set still wins. |

Every section except the shortcut ones has Restore Defaults… in its header. System also has Reset all preferences…, which puts General, Canvas, On Air and Output back at once — shortcut sets, show settings and machine settings are not touched.
