# Stream Deck: Runtime

> How a press becomes an action.

Presses are executed server-side. Unit commands go through the same gate the API and control panels use; animations are queued into the page's own play queue and published; page events reach the runtime.

- The editor grid mirrors the panel over SSE: device, profile, rendered keys and presses all arrive as events.
- POST /api/streamdeck/press drives a key without hardware — useful for testing a layout.
- A key can start a stopped page runtime, so an operator is not sent back to a laptop to bring a page up.
- The bank the deck shows after a press can be changed by the press itself.
